An inefficient bungalow, heated by five coal fireplaces, was rebuilt as a low-energy family house. The old loft conversion had been condemned by LABC. We replaced the top floor and upgraded the fabric of the original masonry.
The new upper floor holds three bedrooms and an office. The master bedroom has an ensuite, and there is a family bathroom. The front is a new entrance with a dormer that has no conventional window reveals, which made the detailing a genuine piece of carpentry.
Heating and power now come from an air-source heat pump, solar panels and battery storage, with insulation added to the existing masonry walls. The aim was straightforward: a house that is comfortable to live in and cheap to run.
